There were so many Valentine’s Day mixtapes going around the internet yesterday that I had to put them together and share with y’all. I don’t even really dig on Valentine’s Day but these mixtapes put me in the spirit… to sit at home and watch movies by myself. Add all the pizza Instagrams from my single friends and all these great Valentine’s Day tapes and it was way better than I expected.
Let’s start with Hudson Mowawke da Valentine’s Day mixtape gawd as he dropped his “Valentines Slowjams Chapter VIII“. It’s much slower with very old school soul and more original production and personal touch than the others below, plus gunshots in true mixtape fashion. If you like it, or find it useful, you should go back and listen to Chapters I-VII.
DJ Sean G samples Aziz Ansari’s hilarious standup from Buried Alive over “Let’s Get It On” and in and out though out his “Valentimes Tape” and that’s only part of its greatness. He also isn’t shy about playing the modern classics like Outkast’s “So Fresh, So Clean” and other childhood throwbacks like CRAIG DAVID’S “7 DAYS”, plus relevant samples like Kanye West’s “Slow Jamz”. Very accessible and easy to vibe to it.
Robert Lux made his Valentine’s Mix “Beats Are For Lovers” as a gift for an organization called Building Beats in New York. He samples Casablanca in the beginning so it gets off to a (personally) great start and builds from there. It’s mostly old soul and disco over smooth house beats plus some newer R&B. Standouts include Mtume’s “Juicy Fruit” early and Common’s “I Want You” later but the whole thing is very bouncy and club ready.
