Tuxedo is the name of the group comprised of Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One, continuing the trend of bringing funk from the 80s into today. Tuxedo is also the name of the album and it brings the funk in earnest.
I’m happy to hear more albums with these vibes if only because it means we’re closer to a Soul Train reboot and/or more material for
Soul Train parties where classic episodes of Soul Train are on in the background while listening to an album such as this. Outfits optional but encouraged.
“I Got U” would be the perfect song for such a party, and if you’re still not convinced check out the video for “Do It”.
The other single, “Number One”, is a lovely tribute to rap classic
“Ain’t No Fun (If the Homies Can’t Have None)” and makes the album worthwhile on its own. Not much else to say other than give it a spin and #vibetoit, and if you have a Chromecast or Apple TV maybe throw on some Soul Train.
